Non-turbo Subarus are easy on oil (not so sure about the new chain driven ones though), so any synthetic oil will do. If you prefer M1, use it because it consitently puts up excellent test results. In the past, Valvoline full synthetic (both regular syn, and MaxLife) were the smoothest running oils in my Subaru.
